CATALYTIC CONVERTERS: What Are They?

A catalytic converter is a crucial component in a vehicle’s exhaust system designed to reduce harmful emissions and pollutants. It works by converting toxic gases like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides into less harmful substances such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. This conversion is achieved through a chemical reaction facilitated by a catalyst, typically made of precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium, which are coated onto a ceramic or metallic substrate inside the converter.

HOW THE FACTORY (OEM) CATALYTIC CONVERTER INCREASES YOUR VEHICLES SCRAP VALUE

When it comes to junk cars, the presence of an original factory catalytic converter can significantly impact the vehicle’s value. This is because these converters contain valuable precious metals that can be reclaimed and recycled by the auto recycler. The original factory parts often use higher-quality materials and design, making them particularly sought after in the recycling market. As a result, even if the car is no longer operational or in poor condition, the catalytic converter can be removed and sold for its scrap value, which can enhance the overall worth of the junk car. Aftermarket catalytic converters are far more inferior to the OEM part to the point they hold little to no scrap value. So much so they are illegal to install in many states including New York State.
